Here is an infographic of a typical 24 hour weekday for me showing how I use the Apple Watch as my wearable companion.
There are many functions of the Apple Watch which I do not use in a typical 24 hour workday so those I have not included in the infographic, although I will use them occasionally.
24 Hours with the Apple Watch
- 07:00 – Typically I look for the latest news using Twitter, and see what notifications that came in overnight on my social media accounts. I will also get a summary of my sleep courtesy of the AutoSleep app.
- 0:800 – I will check my work schedule on my watch. I especially look for the rooms that are booked so that I head in the right direction if I am going into the office.
- 08:30 – Essential to see the weather forecast.
- 09:00 – 17.30. While working I will receive notifications of texts, Whats App, Messenger, emails and also social media notifications for Twitter and Instagram, LinkedIn etc. I often reply with emojis, or quick replies on the watch, but for longer replies I will switch to my laptop or mobile. I often dictate short replies for Whats App into my watch. If my phone is not accessible while a call is coming in then I will answer it on my smartwatch.
I have one of my Twitter accounts active on my smartwatch via the Chirp app. It feels great to do social media engagement from my watch. - 18:00 – I have to confess like many others that the workout and activity apps on the Apple Watch transformed my daily routine for exercise, and now I have that special feeling when all 3 rings are closed.
- 22:00 – I struggled to get anywhere near my target for water intake until I added an app for it. The WaterMinder app is far and away my most used app. Daily I track my water intake and have been doing so everyday for the past 2+ years. I have created Siri shortcuts so I can quickly tell Siri to add my water updates on the go. I also use Siri shortcuts to adjust my Philips Hue lights throughout the house. The vast majority have scheduled on and off sequences but I love to vary the scenes based on my mood.
- 23:00 – I use AppleMusic on my watch so I have the full array of Siri commands that work nicely with that. However my vast collection of music playlists is on Spotify, and I love to use the watch but the range of controls is not as vast as with AppleMusic. Throughout the day I use Siri and also the new hand-washing timer feature that arrived with iOS14.
The Apple Watch works great with Apple AirPods by the way, but I also have other backup options for sound.
My first Smart Watches – 2012
I love trying out new technology. I was eager to try the first smartwatch that I saw with a big color screen. The I’m smartwatch was a really good attempt at what the future would be. However, the sync process was just terrifying. In the end I would have to do a manual sync every few hours.
There was a lot more wrong with it but I carried on until it died and stopped working.
My next two smartwatches were the “My Kronoz – ZeSplash2” and the Cookoo. They were much better than the “I’m watch”. However they were also not reliable with the connection to the phone and other issues.
It was very frustrating. Then I heard rumors that Apple was working on a smartwatch. I knew that they would sort out the issues I had experienced for the past years with the early models.
This is why I really appreciate my Apple Watch in so many ways, and I use it throughout each day. First time users of the Apple Watch take for granted many of the things I struggled with for many years. Lucky them 😉
