What is Vlogging?
Vlogging is similar to blogging but uses video as the main media type. Vloggers are confident folks and feel very comfortable expressing themselves by video. Setting creative goals is key and having the right equipment. My suggestion is to add the remote camera app to your quick video setup list.
Quick video setups vs. Permanent studio for video recording
Which of these two aligns with the way that you work? I have enough equipment to create a video recording studio but I prefer to use what I need for each task.
Here is my quick take on the essential differences:
Quick Video Setups:
- Smaller, more compact lighting and audio equipment to set up quickly for a one-off shoot.
I already created a blog post on getting started with equipment for basic video vlogging. - Use of apps on mobile devices to help with editing and final image and video creation while on the move like the Camera Remote App.

Permanent studio for video recording:
- Larger, more expensive equipment to achieve professional results for long-term projects.
- Use of computer programs for more detailed editing and image and video creation instead of mobile device apps.
Camera Remote App
In the previous section I mentioned that apps on mobile devices can help with editing and final image and video creation while on the move or with quick setups. One of those apps that I have used a lot over the years is the Camera Remote App. It is great for a quick video session. I use it on my Applewatch to remotely access my iPhone camera to video or to create a photo;
- Manage the video viewable area by myself without needing a second person to tell me what is within the view of the phone device. I can easily see the video viewable area in the app on my Applewatch.
- Wake up my iPhone with the camera remote app on my Applewatch so I do not have to get up to turn it on.
- Control the flash, set a shutter timer of 3 seconds, and switch the selection from front to rear camera and vice versa.
- Zoom the camera view by rotating the Applewatch digital crown.

5 suggestions for optimizing your vlogging content
Finally lets go through some basic tips for Vlogging success:
- Keep videos short – most social media platforms have a time limit, so keep it under the limit and make sure it’s action-packed
- Add captions – subtitles and captioning increase viewer engagement and make it easier for viewers who are not in a position to enable sound. I use a mobile app to add captions while on the go.
- Include a call to action – use a direct call to action at the end of the video
- Remember mobile FIRST- majority of people will be viewing your video on their phones, so be sure to optimize for mobile by keeping the size of the video small and using eye-catching visuals.
- Make it unique – come up with creative ways to make your video content stand out and be memorable.
Let me know if you are a regular user of the camera remote app, or what is your feedback upon first use. Leave your comments below. For more tips for vlogging view this blog post by my previous guest blogger Ieva.
