Dealing with Instagram Spam

Posted on July 27, 2022September 14, 2025 by Clive Roach

Instagram is extremely popular and fun to use and businesses are starting to connect their product feeds to enable Instagram shopping so exciting things are always happening. However there are one or two things we do not like so much. Suggested posts can often get out of hand but comment spam like “promote it on” and many others are very tedious.

How to block common Instagram spam phrases

It is so annoying seeing bot driven comment spam all over your engagement. If you would rather not have them here is a simple process to avoid them described in the video.

It is easy to set up via the settings option of your Instagram account. If you are using the desktop/laptop go to settings, privacy and comments, then “edit comments settings”. Then add the spam phrases you want to block.

"Promote it on" Instagram Spam

Let’s use the example of the spam trend that was very popular some while back – “Promote it on”. The process will work good for other related spam comments like “Send pic on”, “send this pic” and “send me pics” etc. It is a simple tweak to your settings that takes 2 minutes to set up. Give it a try.

If you suffer from other kinds of spam always note that you can report inappropriate posts and comments on Instagram via this process.

Hi Clive, Thanks for this one, I’ve noticed it more and more of late. I was wondering who are all these people asking for us to post on their sites or promote there? I assume they are charging for it too, right?

I have not met one myself but while doing the research for this post I read about the experience of one user who went through with it. It was a small-time influencer, who was very aggressive with asking for a fee to promote their content. I do not know what happened in the end, but this gives us a clue. Sending out lots and lots of bot messages hoping someone bites. My opinion… be in control yourself and run your own Instagram ads, which folks can do now without linking up a Facebook page to the Instagram account.
