Polls in LinkedIn – Sunset in 2014
Who recalls using polls in LinkedIn before they were removed in 2014?
Do you miss them? I miss them. They were used by me during my years leading the social media efforts in Philips Healthcare.
I recall the LinkedIn update that polls were being “Sunsetted”. LinkedIn said that they had launched significant new products over the recent 6 months like Sponsored updates, in-mail on mobile, and others. LinkedIn had a “philosophy of focusing their efforts into the most effective and impactful solutions for their clients” and polls were not going to be a part of that picture. The official date was issued as April 17th 2014. However, LinkedIn Polls are now BACK!

The Potential of LinkedIn Polls
Where do I now see the potential of LinkedIn Polls? I see three areas where they will have impact:
Groups.
LinkedIn groups is a good choice. I used them there on many occasions in the past. Polls are an efficient way to gather feedback. Here is a past simple example of a small LinkedIn poll from one of my projects in 2013:
I often used polls to create a summary from a group of specialists.
Now they are back. Use them!
Events.
Event posts are another area to use Polls. Imagine gathering feedback from attendees on a range of topics.
Personal Profiles.
They are also available for member profiles and thus visible to 1st degree connections. Poll engagement will boost personal branding and we shall see if that activity will contribute to the SSI (Social Selling Index) ratings, in the “engage with insights” section.
Make Your First Poll Now – Evaluate the Results.
Recently I saw a clever use of LinkedIn reactions; requesting members to select a reaction based on it being associated with a choice of images in the post. However, this is now a stop gap tactic in the past now. LinkedIn Polls are back.
Get started, run your first polls and evaluate the results and engagement rates compared to posts without polls. Look at the bigger wider impact to your influence and share of voice.
